Why Brands Are Producing Docu-Style Content

A documentary film is, by definition, a nonfiction motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, for instruction, education, or historical record. Brands figured out a long time ago that borrowing that format makes their content more watchable.

The result is docu-style brand content: video that is either directly or tangentially related to a product or service, but shot and structured to feel like it belongs in a film festival, not a commercial break.

Why It Works

Gillette ran a series exploring the lost art of kissing, asking real people about facial hair and attraction. It was for a shaving brand, but it didn’t feel like a shaving ad. It felt like something worth watching. That’s the whole point.

Docu-style content works because it doesn’t announce itself as advertising. It approaches the audience as curious rather than persuasive. When a brand has something genuine to say about the world, their industry, their customers, their craft, the documentary format lets that thing be said without the audience’s defenses going up.

What It Actually Requires

The format is demanding. Docu-style content can’t be faked. If the story isn’t there, if the people on camera aren’t compelling, if the shooting style is mimicking documentary aesthetics without the underlying substance, audiences will feel it and disengage.

This isn’t content you produce at volume. It’s content you produce when the story is strong enough to earn the format.

What it requires:

  • A genuine story or perspective worth documenting
  • Real subjects who can carry extended screen time
  • A production team that understands pacing, interview technique, and observational shooting, not just commercial execution
  • Editorial restraint in post

The ROI Argument

Docu-style content tends to be shared. It builds brand credibility over time rather than driving immediate conversion. That’s a different marketing function than a thirty-second spot, and it’s worth being clear about what you’re buying when you commission it.

If the goal is direct response, this is the wrong format. If the goal is establishing the brand as something people trust and want to be associated with, docu-style earns that in a way most advertising formats can’t.
